Sharjah: Four men allegedly involved in snatching women’s handbags have been arrested recently by Sharjah Police.

The gang members, all in their 20s, are two from Comoros Island and two Asians.

Gulf News reader Asma Ali said her husband filed a police complaint after her handbag was snatched by a young man who was on a motorbike recently.

The woman was walking on a public road in Sharjah at night when the incident took place.

She said a young man wearing a helmet appeared suddenly on a motorbike and snatched her handbag before disappearing.

“I was in shock and did not know what to do. Then I started shouting, asking for help and then I called my husband who came and took me to the police station.”

“I gave the police the description of the man and his motorbike. After a few days, I received a call from the police that they had arrested the suspect and asked me to identify him. I appreciate the efforts made by Sharjah Police who kept in touch with me from the moment they received my complaint till they arrested the suspect. It was a great effort by them,” Ali said.

An officer told Gulf News that the police received a number of complaints of bag snatching by young men on motorbikes from one area in the emirate.

A team was formed after one victim said she had Dh2,000 in the bag and some credit cards. The police received a complaint from another woman whose bag was snatched in a similar manner. She was accosted by four young men on two motorbikes.

They snatched her handbag and a mobile phone.

After snatching the bags, the suspects divided the money between them. To avoid getting caught, they snatched bags every two weeks and not on a daily basis. The police found cash and stolen items in their possession at the time of their arrest.
