Dubai: A garage worker was jailed for three months for trying to steal a bicycle near Dubai Metro although he claimed that he was waiting for a taxi.

Policemen who were patrolling near the Dubai Metro station at 7.50am saw two men trying to cut the chains locking a bicycle to a stand in May.

One of the men fled the scene once he saw the police officer while the second man, a 28-year-old Pakistani garage worker, was apprehended.

Police found with him a pair of scissors and a razor with which he and the other suspect had been trying to cut the chains and steal bicycles.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the 28-year-old defendant of attempting to steal a bicycle.

“I was not trying to steal the bicycle. I was standing there beside the bicycles’ stand waiting for a taxi. There was another person who was trying to cut the chains and he ran away once the police saw him. They arrested me instead but I had nothing to do with the incident,” the defendant told the presiding judge.

According to the primary ruling, the accused will be deported after serving his punishment.

The accused and the absconder tried to steal bicycles from the stand beside Al Ittihad Metro Station using scissors and razors.

When asked by the court whether police found him cutting the chains and stealing the bicycle, the defendant said: “No they did not. I am new in town and when the other man started running once the police spotted him, I did not know what to do … they thought that I was helping him, but I wasn’t.”

The police officer testified that he saw two men [including the defendant] trying to cut chains of bicycles locked to the stands.

“When I went towards them, one man ran away but I stopped the suspect. I found in his possession a scissor and a razor with which he was trying to cut the bicycle’s chain,” he said.

The ruling remains subject to appeal.
