Dubai: A worker has been jailed for three months for chasing a secretary at 3.15am and groping her in a dark area after she alighted from a bus.

The 20-year-old Pakistani worker followed the Indian secretary, who was heading back home after work, and groped her repeatedly before running away in January.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendant of molesting the woman, although he had pleaded not guilty.

The presiding judge said the accused will be deported after serving his jail term.

The Indian secretary testified that she had finished work and was heading back to her residence when the defendant stalked her at 3.15am.

“I stepped out of the bus and was walking towards my residence when the accused came from behind and groped me … and then ran away quickly. I tried to chase him … he apologised to me and said that he is a Muslim and then ran away. It was too dark and I did not find any body to help me stop the defendant. When I reached the building where I live, I told the security guards what had happened. The guards called the police and they also went on a manhunt in the vicinity. Shortly after that, the police apprehended two persons and showed them to me at the building … but I told them that none of them was the defendant. Six minutes later, they brought in another person, and it turned out to be the same molester. He was taken into custody,” she said.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
