Dubai: A worker has been accused of beating a man, who had bailed him out of jail and could not get back his passport after the worker absconded.

The Pakistani worker, A.R., was said to have been involved in a criminal case in Sharjah before his 50-year-old countryman, A.M., deposited his passport to bail A.R. out in November.

A.M. started searching for A.R., who had disappeared and not visited the police station again, because he needed his passport.

Records said when A.M. coincidentally found A.R. in Al Hamriya area and tried to call the police, the suspect and his Pakistani friend, A.I., assaulted him.

Prosecutors charged A.I. and A.R. with assaulting A.M. and causing him a permanent disability.

According to records, A.R. remains at large.

When the suspect appeared in the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday, he pleaded not guilty.

“I did not beat him,” A.I. told presiding judge Mohammad Jamal.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the defendants inflicted a 4 per cent permanent disability on A.M.

The 50-year-old victim testified to prosecutors that the incident happened after he tried to take back his passport from Sharjah Police.

“A.R. got involved in a criminal case in Sharjah and I handed over my passport to bail him out. Thereafter he never showed up again at the police … and I could not get back my passport. A.R. had disappeared and I searched for him in several places. When I ran into him coincidentally in Al Hamriya, I restrained him and called the police. A.I. and A.R. assaulted me and they fled. I was rushed to hospital for treatment,” A.M. claimed to prosecutors.

A ruling will be heard on February 28 and A.I. will be sentenced in absentia.
