Dubai: A woman, who punched her flatmate and caused her partial blindness after quarrelling over putting their food on the shelves of the refrigerator, has been jailed for six months.

The 34-year-old Tunisian woman had been sharing a flat in Deira with a number of Moroccan women and two of her countrywomen in September.

Sometime around midnight, the 34-year-old woman went to the kitchen to take some food from the refrigerator before she called her 36-year-old Moroccan flatmate to remove her stuff off the shelf.

Each of the women had an allotted shelf in the refrigerator.

When the Tunisian woman asked the Moroccan victim to remove her food items from the shelf, the two got into a heated argument that developed into a fight.

The two women pulled each other’s hair after which the Tunisian woman punched on Moroccan woman’s eye.

When the flatmates saw blood coming out from the Moroccan woman’s eye, they informed the police about the incident and the injured woman was rushed to the hospital.

Medical reports said the Moroccan victim sustained partial blindness.

The Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the Tunisian defendant in absentia to six months in jail for assaulting her flatmate and causing her a 20 per cent permanent disability.

Presiding judge Urfan Omar said the accused will be deported after serving her punishment.

The defendant failed to attend her trial.

The Moroccan woman testified that the accused assaulted her after a heated argument.

A 31-year-old Tunisian flatmate said the two women quarrelled over keeping the food on the shelves of the refrigerator.
