Dubai: A woman business consultant, who slipped into a 40-day coma following her unsuccessful suicide bid when she swallowed 50 Prazolam pills, was fined and deported.

The 28-year-old Jordanian consultant, who suffers from panic and anxiety disorders as a result of depression, according to records, was found by her cleaner unconscious in the bedroom of her flat in Dubai Marina.

Once the cleaner realised that the woman was pale, not responsive and seemed to have vomited before she collapsed unconscious on her bed, he instantly called up an ambulance in December 2016.

Paramedics rushed the Jordanian woman to hospital where emergency doctors operated on her cardiopulmonary resuscitation thrice so she could be brought back to life and was connected to an artificial ventilator.

Law enforcement officers could not take down her statement since she was in coma.

However, upon inspecting the woman’s bag, it was discovered that she had possessed drug pills and mind-affecting substances that were confiscated and Dubai Police’s anti-narcotics department were informed about the incident.

Shortly after she woke up from her 40-day coma and regained her consciousness, the woman was discharged from hospital.

On the day when she was trying to fly out on a holiday, the 28-year-old woman was banned from travelling and airport officials notified her that she had to visit a police station because of a criminal case that had been lodged against her.

When she visited the police station concerned, her passport was confiscated and she was directed to visit the Public Prosecution.

Prosecutors accused the defendant of possessing different drug pills and banned substances for her personal consumption and attempting to kill herself by taking Prazolam pills.

When she appeared in the Dubai Misdemeanours Court, she pleaded not guilty and claimed that she took her medicine, and had no intention to commit suicide.

She also provided the court with medical reports that confirm that she suffers from depression and mental disorders and she is under medication.

The court fined the defendant Dh5,000 and ordered her to be deported.

In her statement before prosecutors, the woman denied that he had tried to kill herself.

She told the interrogating prosecutor that she had a medical prescription from her doctor in Jordan who had prescribed to her those pills as a treatment for her depression and mental disorders.

The defendant further told prosecutors that she had not tried to kill herself but on the night of the incident she took her medicine and slept, slipped into coma and woke up to find herself in hospital after 40 days.

Dubai Police forensic medicine report confirmed that the amount of pills that the defendant had swallowed indicated that she had tried to kill herself.

The primary judgement became final and the defendant has already been deported.
