Dubai: A visitor, who was beaten by a female lawyer when he stopped her in a mall and asked to have sex with her, has been jailed for six months.
The 43-year-old Bahraini lawyer beat the 28-year-old Algerian visitor with her slipper.
The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted him of molesting the woman and cursing her in public.
The lawyer and her friend were walking around the mall when the defendant called out to her, asking her to stop.
He approached the woman and told her that he wanted to be acquainted with her and have sex.
She instantly removed her slipper and started hitting the man, who began cursing and calling her names.
The accused allegedly also touched the woman inappropriately twice before trying to leave. The woman filmed him with her mobile phone to show to the police.
According to the ruling, the accused who pleaded not guilty, will be deported after serving his punishment.
When he defended himself in court, he said: “I did not molest her. She cursed my mother and I slapped and pushed her.”
The lawyer testified that she was walking with her friend at a mall when the incident happened.
“He called out to me saying ‘please ... please stop’. I ignored him and continued walking. Then he called me again and I stopped. He told me that he wanted to get to know me and have sex with me … I took off my slipper and hit him. He then cursed me and also cursed Arabs. I yelled at him to draw other shoppers’ attention … but no one intervened. I put my slipper back on and walked away … he took me by surprise and touched me twice. Thereafter I filmed him with my mobile and then he ran away,” she said.
The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
