Dubai: A vendor has been accused of sliding his fingers between a number of bedcovers that he was showing a woman buyer and molesting her.
The 55-year-old Indian vendor, A.M., was said to have groped the 26-year-old Kenyan woman in his textile shop in April.
Prosecutors accused A.M. of molestation.
The suspect did not enter a plea when he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday due to the absence of a translator.
According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the suspect groped the woman.
The woman testified to prosecutors that the incident happened while she was shopping for bedcovers in Naif area.
“I walked into his shop to buy some bedcovers. He showed me some items that I did not like … I asked him to display some other items. He told me to wait and went into a room at the back of the store to get more samples. On his way in, his knee hit my thigh and I thought it happened by mistake. He came out and placed the bedcovers on a table. While showing them, he slid his hand between the bedcovers and caressed me. I yelled at him … some pedestrians gathered outside the shop and they called the police when I told them what he had done,” she claimed.
The suspect was quoted as admitting to prosecutors that he molested the woman.
Presiding judge Mohamad Jamal adjourned the hearing until a translator is made available on May 31.
