Dubai: A technician has been accused of groping a 14-year-old schoolgirl in the lift of the building where she lives.

The Indian schoolgirl was said to have returned from the institute where she studies and walked into the lift when the 28-year-old Pakistani technician came in also in June.

The girl pressed on the third floor button, according to records, while the technician pressed on the second floor button at 5.30pm.

Once the lift started escalating, the man was believed to have groped the girl, who shouted at him before he ran away when the lift’s door opened on the second floor.

The girl rushed to her father and told him about what had happened before he reported the matter to the police.

Having been reported about a series of child molestation incidents in Hor Al Anz, police officers rushed to the building for on-site investigation.

While one of the policemen was taking down the statement of the building’s security guard, the 28-year-old technician was spotted walking into the building.

The policeman, who had been briefed about the suspected serial molester’s description earlier, instantly asked the Pakistani technician to stop.

Upon asking him what he was doing in the building, the 28-year-old replied that he had been called to fix an air-conditioning unit in a flat.

The policeman then summoned the Indian girl who immediately identified the man who had groped her in the lift.

Prosecutors charged the suspect with molestation.

The suspect pleaded guilty when he showed up before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Tuesday.

The 14-year-old testified to prosecutors that the suspect groped her while she was alone with him in the elevator.

“At first he asked me if I am a Pakistani and I told him no. Suddenly, he touched me and when I yelled at him, he removed his hands and rushed out of the lift on the second floor. He was peeping at me strangely and in a frightening way,” she claimed to prosecutors.

The policeman who arrested him testified to prosecutors that he suspected the 28-year-old once he saw him walking into the building.

“Due to the number of child molestation complaints lodged at the police station, I remembered his descriptions from those mentioned in the complaints. Then I took him into custody once the girl identified him,” he claimed to prosecutors.

The suspect was cited as admitting to prosecutors that he had apologised to the girl after he groped her.

A ruling is expected on October 24.
