Ras Al Khaimah: The case of an Emirati man, who shot his wife several times in Ras Al Khaimah, has been transferred to public prosecution, a police official said on Sunday.

The Emirati woman, in her forties, suffered several gunshot injuries in the incident on Saturday. The husband later turned himself in to police.

Major General Ali Abdullah Bin Alwan Al Nuaimi, Commander-in-Chief of the RAK Police, said the Central Operations Room was notified on Saturday evening about a shooting incident in a house and that police and paramedics were immediately dispatched to the house.

“Initial investigations showed that the accused fired several rounds at his wife following a heated argument,” Major General Al Nuaimi said. “The woman who sustained several injuries has been admitted to a nearby hospital and her condition is stable,” he added.

Major General Al Nuaimi said the man, also in his forties, surrendered to the police soon after the shooting. Investigations are under way to find the cause of the crime.

In regards to weapon license, the UAE law number 5 of 2009 regulates the right for Emiratis to own weapons in the UAE.

To own and carry any kind of weapon requires an official permission from the government. Those who want to own or carry any weapon, including firearms, have to submit an application with the Ministry of Interior. The applicant has to cite reasons for owning or carrying the weapon, such as self-defence, hunting etc.

A six-month permit or licence is issued, which can be renewed. Mostly the permit/licence is issued for hunting.
