Dubai: Police have arrested a man for running a gambling den and brothel after they were called out to a villa following reports he had been stabbed.

Police attended the scene on May 23 after hearing the Chinese man had been attacked by a gang in the villa’s front yard and had a head injury.

When police raided the villa in Abu Hail, a number of police lieutenants discovered evidence that the 34-year-old man, H.Z., was running the villa as a nightclub, gambling den and brothel. Meanwhile, four Chinese women, aged between 25 and 31, were arrested for working as prostitutes at the villa.

“No, I am not guilty. I did not run a brothel or a gambling den,” said H.Z. before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Thursday.

Meanwhile his fellow countrywomen pleaded not guilty before presiding judge Ali Attiyah Sa’ad.

An Emirati police lieutenant testified the police raided the villa shortly after they were alerted about the assault near the Bangladeshi Consulate.

“We raided the villa and discovered that it was equipped to be run like a nightclub on the ground floor. The villa was split into nine rooms, each of which had a separate restroom. Surveillance cameras were also fixed at the gates. A gambling table was fixed in one of the ground floor rooms. We also found massive boxes of different kinds of liquor bottles. The man was attacked with sharp-edged weapons in the villa’s front yard. Primary investigations revealed the man suffered a deep cut to his head. Police took separate action in the assault case… meanwhile Al Muraqqabat police station’s director ordered us to search the villa,” said the lieutenant.

Prosecution records said the four women accused of prostitution were taken into custody. Police seized dozens of contraceptives and nearly Dh30,000 in cash from the villa.

During questioning, H.Z. admitted to police that he ran the villa as a gambling den and also provided alcohol for his clients. He also confessed that the four women worked for him as prostitutes.

The trial continues.
