Dubai: A naked body of woman was found behind a bus stop near Dubai Courts early Thursday morning, Gulf News has learned.
An investigation has been launched as authorities are treating it as a criminal case.
Law enforcement officers have launched an enquiry to establish the circumstances leading to the suspected murder of the woman, who is said to be Georgian, a senior prosecution source told Gulf News.
“I can confirm that 99 per cent of the death is related to a foul play. The woman was found undressed and dead [the source did not specify how] behind one of the bus stops here facing the buildings of Dubai Court and Public Prosecution. It has been established from the primary and onsite investigations, that the woman was raped and then killed … however further investigations will reveal exactly what happened.”
“As part of the ordinary procedures in such cases, prosecutors have instructed law enforcement officers to check all the footages of CCTV and surveillance cameras in the area where the woman’s body was found. More than one suspects are believed to be involved in this case,” a senior prosecutor told Gulf News without divulging further details.
A number of lawyers and staff of Dubai Courts, who arrived as early as 5am [Thursday], confirmed that they spotted four to five police cars and ambulances.
“I arrived directly after Fajr prayer and parked in the parking lot in front of the Court’s building. Obviously, something was going on in the opposite side of the road. When I asked, I was told that an undressed woman was found dead behind the bus stop. I saw several policemen and members of the forensic investigative teams carrying onsite investigations and examining the location,” said a lawyer.
A law enforcement officer said: “Initially there were rumours that one woman was found dead and another woman was left in front of a hospital nearby after she was brutally beaten, raped and left naked. It was believed to be that that the two incidents were connected but it was later clarified that the deceased is the same woman, who was found naked and dead. The victim’s friend, who was drunk, is the one who reported the matter to the police … she is also the one who alleged that her friend [the deceased] was raped.”
“No further details could be obtained, pending further interrogations. Dubai police’s forensic examiner will carry out an autopsy and provide us with the findings soon,” the senior prosecutor said.
