Dubai: A jobless man, who tried to abscond from a police station after slamming a policeman against the wall, has been jailed for six months.

The 38-year-old Pakistani man was apprehended and was being searched by a policeman inside a police station when he resisted and pushed the policeman towards the wall in February. The policeman fell and injured himself even as the Pakistani tripped and fell on the floor while trying to run out of the police station.

On Tuesday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the Pakistani defendant of pushing the policeman and injuring him while he was doing his duty.

Presiding judge Mohammad Jamal said the accused would be deported after serving his six-month imprisonment.

The defendant pleaded guilty and contended that he did not intend to injure the policeman.

Dubai Police’s forensic examination report confirmed that the assaulted policeman sustained a broken finger and other bruises.

The policeman testified that the Pakistani was apprehended and was being taken into the lock-up when the incident happened.

“As part of our precautionary measures, I was searching the defendant before taking him into the lock-up … suddenly he pushed me strongly to the wall and fell down. The defendant then ran way but while he was rushing out, he stumbled and fell on the floor. Other policemen realised what had happened and instantly grabbed the defendant and prevented him from escaping … they handcuffed him and put him inside the lock-up,” he said.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
