Dubai: A man was arrested two years after his involvement in a Dh900,000 armed robbery in 2013, during which a security company’s guards were stunned with a Taser gun and robbed.

The 41-year-old Ethiopian man, F.A., was absconding since October 2013 when two Nigerian convicts ambushed two guards — a Ugandan and a Nepalese — and attacked them near an ATM machine at Al Muhaisnah.

Dubai Police arrested F.A. for his involvement in a separate case, but since his fingerprints matched those lifted from the crime scene of the armed robbery in 2013, he was referred to the Public Prosecution for further interrogations.

In 2015, the Dubai Appeal Court jailed the Nigerian duo, A.A. and J.K., for three years each for attacking the guards and stealing the Dh900,000.

Prosecutors accused F.A. of aiding and abetting the Nigerians convicts and referred him to the Dubai Court of First Instance where he pleaded not guilty on Monday.

“I told them [Nigerian convicts] I did not want to go with them … and when they returned home, they informed me about the heist,” argued F.A. as he defended himself before presiding judge Urfan Omar in court.

Records said A.A. and J.K. used force to attack the guards, who were carrying the money to refill the ATM machine at Lulu Village.

The Nigerians, who are currently serving their three-year jail term, admitted in court earlier that a third suspect had asked them to go and take the money.

The Ugandan security guard testified that he and his Nepalese colleague carried two bags when the attack happened at 11am.

“I carried the bag that contained the required tools to open the ATM while my workmate carried the moneybag. The defendants took us by surprise and attacked us. One of them punched me repeatedly and knocked me down while the other stunned my workmate with the Taser. They grabbed the moneybag and fled,” claimed the Ugandan.

The Nepalese security guard said the defendants attacked the Ugandan first and then him.

A police lieutenant said police identified the defendants through the number plate of the car, which they used to run away after the crime.

“Identifying their fingerprints and whereabouts, police raided their flat in Nakheel area and arrested them. Police seized Dh28,500 and a BlackBerry phone from A.A. and Dh9,700 and two laptops, an iPad and a BlackBerry phone from J.K. Two other suspects [including F.A.] remained at large,” said the lieutenant.

Available records did not specify the date when F.A. was arrested.

Presiding judge Omar adjourned the hearing until a lawyer is appointed to defend F.A. when the court reconvenes on February 22.
