Dubai: A man lost his appeal and will spend six months in jail for sexually abusing a tourist in his friend’s car after they had met at a cafe.

The 19-year-old Norwegian tourist was drinking alcohol at a cafe when the 33-year-old man, from Comoros Island, and his Emirati friend invited her over to join them at their table in December 2016.

Shortly after she joined them, the two friends introduced themselves to the tourist and bought her another drink.

Then the three went in the Emirati’s car to Jumeirah and were denied entry to one of the nightclubs because the Norwegian was under 21.

Then the two men took her to another bar where they offered her another drink, after which the 19-year-old tourist said she was sedated.

The Norwegian opened her eyes again to find herself in her underwear in the car’s back seat with the Comoros Island man trying to have sex with her.

The woman shouted and cried for help before Emirati man intervened and pulled the defendant off her.

The Emirati man took the girl to his residence where she showered in the shower sprinklers in the garden and then dropped her back to her hotel in Al Garhoud.

When the Norwegian discovered that her phone and credit card missing, she reported to the police that she had been robbed.

In January, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the 33-year-old defendant of sexually abusing the tourist. The defendant appealed the judgement before the Appeal Court and sought to be acquitted.

In the appellate court, the defendant pleaded not guilty and contended that he didn’t touch the tourist.

The presiding judge dismissed the defendant’s appeal and upheld his one-year imprisonment.

He will be deported.

A police corporal testified that the tourist first reported them that she had been robbed.

“The woman said the night before she was drinking alcohol at Hard Rock Café at 8pm. The accused and his friend, who were seated at an adjacent table, asked her to join them. The girl then said they took her to another bar and she felt sedated after they offered her drink. The Norwegian said the defendant tried to rape her in the car of his friend, who foiled the attempt. We identified the men from the hotel’s CCTV cameras,” he said.

The defendant has already appealed his punishment before the Cassation Court.
