Dubai: A jobless man has been jailed for six months for using his brother’s personal identification documents to avoid being arrested. He was a wanted man.

The Egyptian man, E.A., presented his brother’s Emirates ID when a police patrol stopped him and asked him for his documents in a hotel’s parking lot in August.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted E.A. of using an Emirates ID that belonged to his brother and presenting it to the police as his own.

Presiding judge Urfan Omar said the accused will be deported following the completion of his jail term.

When the defendant showed up in court, he pleaded innocent and denied using his brother’s Emirates ID.

“I did not use the ID, I just went and collected it on my brother’s behalf. I did not use that identification card,” he told the court.

When asked what he requested from the court, the defendant alleged that he had been prosecuted for this case earlier.

Upon checking the court records, it was discovered that he had been prosecuted in a residency case and that involving the use of his brother’s identification documents.

A policeman testified that the defendant was stopped near a five star hotel and taken into custody after he presented his brother’s ID.

“An informant alerted us that the defendant had entered the UAE with his brother’s passport because he had been deported earlier for involvement in a previous forgery case. Police arrested him in a sting operation. When asked about his name, he claimed his name is S. and insisted that the presented Emirates ID belonged to him. However, the iris scan test confirmed that the Emirates ID was that of his brother. Thereafter, he admitted that he had entered the UAE using his brother’s papers because he is wanted by the police,” claimed the policeman.

Thursday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
