Dubai: A man has been jailed for three months for assaulting a television producer by pushing him inside a detention centre and breaking his arm.

The 36-year-old Emirati man was mopping the floor at the detention centre of a police station when he pushed the Egyptian producer and caused him a fracture in his arm in September 2013.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendant of assaulting the victim and causing him a 20 per cent permanent disability in his arm.

The defendant had pleaded not guilty when he appeared before the court and contended that the producer attacked him first before he defended himself.

The case first surfaced in court in May 2016 and the defendant was sentenced in absentia.

The accused requested a retrial, during which he pleaded innocent.

The producer testified that the incident happened when he was heading to drink water inside the detention centre.

“I wanted to get a glass of water around 4.30pm … but the accused stopped me and asked me not to enter. I told him I just wanted a glass of water and would not stay long. He shouted at me and said he was cleaning … then he pushed me hard. I fell on the floor and broke my right arm. I was taken to a hospital,” he testified.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 13 days.
