Dubai: A 70-year-old husband has been accused of beating his wife and causing her a jaw fracture after he pushed her off the stairs in their residence.

The Emirati husband allegedly had a heated argument with his wife before he assaulted her and then pushed her at their residence in October.

The Emirati wife, 44, was beaten up by her husband and pushed off the first-floor stairs, according to records, before she slid down on the stairs and landed on her face and fractured her jaw.

The woman was rushed to hospital and police were informed about a case of domestic violence.

Further interrogations revealed that the husband had beaten his wife and pushed her off the stairs after they had a heated argument.

Records said the heated argument escalated into an assault, during which the wife and her brother assaulted the husband.

Family and Juveniles Prosecution accused the elderly suspect of assaulting his wife and causing her a 15 per cent permanent disability.

Prosecutors also accused the wife of assaulting the 70-year-old and referred her to the Family Misdemeanours Court. Her brother (who remains at large) was also charged with threatening to kill his brother-in-law by saying ‘I will kill anyone who assaults my sister’.

The husband failed to appear before the Dubai Court of First Instance and enter his plea.

Presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi will sentence the 70-year-old suspect in absentia later this month.

In her capacity as a victim, the woman testified to prosecutors that her husband beat her at 6pm on a Wednesday evening.

“He grabbed me by my hand and twisted it and then he pushed me … I fell down the stairs and landed on my jaw which fractured,” she told prosecutors.

The trial before the Family Misdemeanours Court continues.
