Dubai: A maid, who stole her employer’s two mobile phones from a safe while he was visiting his family in Ras Al Khaimah, has been jailed for three months.

The Emirati sponsor checked on the mobile phones and made sure that his Bangladeshi maid’s passport was in the safe before going to visit his family’s house in May.

During his visit, the sponsor’s wife called him around 2pm and notified him that their 29-year-old Bangladeshi maid had absconded.

The man returned to his house in Dubai and discovered that his two mobiles and the maid’s passport were missing before he realised that he had been robbed by his runaway maid.

The Emirati reported the matter to the police who arrested the maid.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the 29-year-old of stealing though she had pleaded not guilty.

“I did not take anything other than my passport,” the accused told the court.

According to the primary judgement, the defendant will be deported following the completion of her punishment.

The Emirati employer testified that the mobiles and the maid’s passport were inside the safe.

“Following my wife’s call, I returned home and discovered that the suspect had taken her passport and the phones and absconded,” he claimed to prosecutors.

The defendant admitted to prosecutors that she had stolen the mobile phones and her passport.
