Dubai: A maid has been accused of robbing Dh1,500 worth of valuables from her sponsor and practising sorcery on his children.

The 38-year-old Indonesian maid, W.K., was said to have hidden her Jordanian sponsor’s valuables in her bedroom and when the sponsor’s sister was searching for the same, she found witchcraft tools in the wardrobe in October.

Prosecutors accused W.K. of stealing and practising sorcery.

When she appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday, she pleaded not guilty and denied robbing her sponsor.

Prosecutors said the suspect stole gold earrings, women’s clothing, accessories and a make-up set.

W.K. is scheduled to appear before the Dubai Misdemeanours Court where she will be tried for sorcery.

The Jordanian sponsor claimed to prosecutors that W.K. had robbed them earlier too and they forgave her after she apologised and promised never to repeat it.

“My sister discovered that her earrings were missing … she suspected that the maid had taken the earrings because of the previous incident. My sister told the maid that she would be searching her bedroom and when she did, she found her earrings and other missing items. However while she was checking her wardrobe, my sister found three pictures of my children pinned to the closet inside … obviously the suspect had been trying to perform some sort of witchcraft on us as my sister also found pieces of paper with strange writing on them,” the sponsor testified.

Records said police arrived to the house and arrested the suspect.

A policewoman testified to prosecutors: “When I questioned the suspect, she admitted that she had stuck pins in the photos because she wanted to make her sponsor’s children love her through practising sorcery. She admitted that she could not complete her practice of sorcery.”

The Indonesian defendant was cited as admitting to prosecutors that she robbed her sponsor and practised sorcery as well.

The judgement in the theft case will be heard on January 31.

Meanwhile the sorcery case remains pending.
