Abu Dhabi: An arrest warrant has been issued for an individual who had reportedly offended the Federal National Council through social media, the Public Prosecution announced on Monday.

Authorities said the UAE’s constitution protects the public’s right to express their opinion as long as it does not breach limitations of morality and religion.

During the recent FNC elections which concluded on October 3 where the preliminary results were announced, a video shared on social media showcased a non-candidate making negative statements about the nominee’s campaigns.

The suspect had reportedly said that he would seek to promote crime and other immoral activities in case he ever became an FNC member.

Caution urged

Meanwhile, Attorney-General of Abu Dhabi, Ali Mohammed Al Baloushi highlighted the importance of caution while using social media.

He also warned against publishing, preparing, producing, using, broadcasting or sending any written or spoken statements, gestures, symbols, drawings, photographs, recordings or writings whether audio, visual or in print of anything that harms society or public order of the country.

The official also stressed the prosecution’s role in constantly conducting campaigns regarding electronic crimes and the legalities surrounding them.

"The FNC represents one of the three main authorities of the country and the individuals nominated and elected represent the voices of the UAE and endeavour to better the UAE’s future,” a statement from the prosecution said.

The FNC election results were recently announced and campaign period witnessed many candidates’ high reliance on social media for their campaign to gain a seat in the Council.
