Dubai: A housecleaner has been accused of stealing a schoolteacher’s ring worth Dh120,000 from a flat that she was hired to clean.

The Canadian teacher was said to have hired the 40-year-old Filipina housecleaner, L.J., to clean her flat and the latter stole the ring while the teacher was at work in October.

Prosecutors accused the suspect of stealing.

According to the charge sheet, L.J. took advantage of the fact that she was cleaning the teacher’s residence when she stole the ring from the washroom.

The Canadian woman claimed to prosecutors that she discovered that her ring was missing from a special stand on the sink in her washroom.

“I hired the housecleaner to dust the house and went for work. The suspect was present with the babysitter at home. When I returned, L.J. had gone. I discovered the theft the next day … when I asked my husband if he had seen the ring, he said no. We reported the matter to the police. A few days later, we were summoned to the police station after the suspect was apprehended … the ring was seized in her possession,” she testified to prosecutors.

The Filipina was cited as admitting to prosecutors that she stole the ring.

The Dubai Court of First Instance’s presiding judge did not read out the accusation against the Filipina suspect.

He adjourned the hearing to hand out a judgement on February 28 and he is expected to issue a decision to refer the case back to prosecutors to introduce some modifications to the current charge sheet.
