Dubai: A security guard has been handed a suspended imprisonment for stealing a gas cylinder from a construction site and selling it as he needed money.
An Egyptian manager at a construction company discovered that the gas cylinder was stolen from the security guards room at the construction site in Naif.
Police were alerted about the theft before further on-site investigations unveiled that the 21-year-old Pakistani security guard had stolen the cylinder during his night shift in October.
Citing ground of leniency, the Dubai Court of First Instance handed the defendant a three-month suspended jail term for stealing the Dh350 worth of gas cylinder from the site.
When the defendant appeared before Court of First Instance, he pleaded guilty but asked for mercy.
He contended before presiding judge Urfan Omar that he stole the cylinder and sold it because he was in desperate need for money.
Presiding judge Omar, according to the judgement sheet, suspended the defendant’s imprisonment for a period of three years citing his young age and circumstances of the case.
However, the accused will be deported.
The Egyptian manager told prosecutors that the suspect was on duty the same evening when the cylinder was stolen.
“It was discovered that the gas cylinder was missing from the guards’ room. Upon questioning the suspect admitted that he stole the gas cylinder as he was in desperate need for money and he sold it to a neighbouring store for Dh100,” the manager told prosecutors.
The suspect admitted to prosecutors that he stole the cylinder.
Prosecutors have filed an appeal against the primary judgement and are seeking a tougher punishment for the suspect.
