Dubai: A female lawyer who disfigured a beauty specialist’s cheek with a glass and cursed her in a drunken rage on New Year’s Eve, has been sentenced to three months in jail.

The 26-year-old Ukrainian lawyer had accompanied her Moldovan friends, a man and a woman, to visit her countrywoman beauty specialist and the latter’s husband in their flat to celebrate New Year’s Eve in January.

At around 3am, the lawyer asked the 29-year-old beauty specialist to speak with her about a private matter concerning her (victim's) husband.

The 26-year-old alleged to the victim that her husband had cheated on her with the Moldovan woman who was present at the party.

Allegations of affair denied

Not believing her, the beauty specialist went straight to her husband and confronted him with what the lawyer had just disclosed to her — but the Moldovan husband strongly trashed the allegations of the 26-year-old.

The Moldovan woman also denied when the beauty specialist asked her if she had been having an affair with her husband.

Thereafter, the 26-year-old Ukrainian, who was drunk, struck the liquor glass that she was carrying on the cheek of the victim, who sustained a severe cut and bled profusely.

The Moldovan couple and the husband also heard the lawyer cursing the beauty specialist in Russian and telling her that she hated her.

The Moldovan husband rushed his injured wife to the hospital and police apprehended the woman lawyer.

Permanent disfigurement

On Monday, the Dubai Court of First Instance sentenced the Ukrainian defendant to three months in jail for cursing the victim and causing her a permanent disfigurement in her face.

Presiding judge Urfan Omar also fined her Dh1,000 for drinking.

“The accused will be deported following the completion of her punishment,” said presiding judge Omar.

The defendant, who was on bail, contended in court earlier that she was not aware of what she had done or what had happened on New Year’s eve, when she claimed that she came to celebrate the occasion in Dubai.

The beauty specialist testified that the accused talked her to speak to her in private.

“She took me aside and claimed that my husband had been cheating on me with the other Moldovan woman who came with her to out flat to celebrate. When I confronted my husband and the other woman with the defendant’s allegations, they both denied. She then got angry and struck me with the glass. I was taken to hospital because I had a severe cut … police picked her up later,” she said.

Monday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
