Dubai: Two workers have been accused of mugging a European visitor at knifepoint on a Dubai street at 4am.

In the March incident, the two Nigerian accused, aged 22 and 32, allegedly waylaid the 25-year-old Uzbek visitor beside a supermarket in Naif area and stole Dh700 from her purse.

Police are searching for two other men who allegedly participated in the mugging.

The Uzbek woman reported the incident to the nearest police station.

Police first tracked down the 22-year-old worker and then arrested his 32-year-old accomplice in his house in Sharjah.

The suspects pleaded not guilty before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Wednesday.

The 32-year-old told presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi that “I was present when the mugging happened, but I was not involved.”

A policeman told prosecutors that the 22-year-old was apprehended first. “During questioning, he claimed that the 32-year-old and two others were present when the mugging incident happened. We arrested the second suspect in his house in Sharjah … the two others remain at large,” he testified.

The court will appoint defence lawyers when it reconvenes on July 5.
