Dubai: Two visitors have been jailed for two years each for breaking into a clinic in Jumeirah and stealing Dh65,000 worth of cash and other valuables from a doctor’s office.

The Chinese duo used a crowbar to break into the clinic at night and steal cash of different foreign currencies and valuables in July 2015.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the duo of breaking into the clinic, wrecking its property and stealing.

A third Chinese suspect was cleared of aiding and abetting the duo due to a lack of corroborated evidence.

Presiding judge Mohammad Jamal said the duo will be deported after serving their jail terms.

The duo used a crowbar and a screwdriver to break the clinic’s doors and the office door and then open the safe and steal the cash and valuables.

A Syrian doctor said one of his assistants called him at 9am and informed him that someone had broken into his office.

“I headed to the clinic and discovered that someone had broken in and destroyed my office’s door and stolen my cash and valuable items from the safe. The office was turned upside down … I reported the matter to the police,” he testified.

A policeman testified that a Chinese suspect had been involved in a similar heist that was carried out using the same modus operandi.

“We brought in that defendant for questioning and he admitted that he and the other men had been involved in a several robberies. We apprehended three Chinese men shortly after that. One of them said he had broken into the clinic on his own and stole the cash and valuables. He said the other two did not participate in the heist,” said the policeman.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 12 days.
