Dubai: Two men have been jailed for six months each for breaking a car window and stealing eight laptops from the vehicle at night.

A Pakistani sales manager of a computer store closed his store at night and kept eight laptops in the back seat of his car before parking it near his residence in March 2016.

The next day when the manager went to the car to head for work, he discovered that the window glass had been broken and the laptops missing.

He called the police and forensic examiners lifted fingerprints from the car for further investigation.

In the meantime, a 51-year-old Nigerian got arrested for his involvement in a similar theft from another car.

During interrogation, the Nigerian said he had been involved along with a 38-year-old compatriot in the theft of laptops from the complainant’s car.

Police later apprehended his accomplice.

On Sunday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the Nigerian defendants of using an iron rod to break the window and stealing the laptops worth Dh8,400 at night.

The two accused, who had pleaded guilty, will be deported following the completion of their punishments.

The Pakistani victim said he kept the laptops in his brother’s car and went up to his flat.

“When I woke up in the morning and went to the car, I realised that the glass was broken and the laptops were stolen. I called the police,” he told prosecutors.

A police sergeant testified that the defendants were apprehended for their involvement in several other thefts carried out using the same modus operandi.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
