Dubai Two workers have been jailed for six months each for mugging a European visitor at knifepoint and robbing her Dh700 in the street at 4am.

The 25-year-old Uzbek visitor was walking near a supermarket in Naif when the two Nigerian workers, 22 and 32, pushed her head down to the ground in March.

Threatening her at knifepoint, the Nigerians searched her purse and stole the money that they found.

Following the armed robbery, the Uzbek visitor reported the matter to the police.

On Wednesday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendants of robbing the visitor at knifepoint although they had pleaded not guilty.

Two other suspects, who abetted the defendants, remain at large.

The two accused will be deported following the completion of their punishments.

The 32-year-old told the court that he was present when the mugging happened but was not involved in it.

The visitor said she was walking alone in the street when she was mugged at knifepoint.

“I saws a group of African men who walked opposite me. Suddenly someone came from behind and pushed my head down towards the ground. He had a knife in his hand. He searched my purse and stole the cash that I had on me. Then he ran away,” she testified.

A policeman claimed that the 22-year-old was apprehended first.

“During questioning, he said the 32-year-old and two others were present when the mugging incident happened. We apprehended the second defendant in his house in Sharjah. The other two remain at large and police are searching for them,” he testified.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
