Dubai: A policeman was sentenced to three months in jail for forging his sick leave certificate and tampering with a medical report that he used to remain absent from work.

The 23-year-old policeman, A.M., tampered with the numeric details mentioned on a medical report that he obtained from a medical centre in Ras Al Khaimah and changed the numbers one to two twice so he could avoid going to work in April.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted A.M. of forging the medical report and using it by handing it to his supervisors to take undeserved leave.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutors said the defendant used a proper medical report that he had obtained previously and changed the dates 16 and 17 [in numerical Arabic] to 26 and 27.

When he showed up in court, the defendant pleaded not guilty contending that he did not tamper with the medical report.

“The forged medical report will be confiscated,” said presiding judge Mohammad Jamal in court.

A police brigadier testified to prosecutors that the act of forging the medical report was discovered in May.

“My duty requires that I check on all sorts of crimes and acts of corruption committed by members of the police force. It was discovered that the defendant had skipped two consecutive working days and when he produced a medical report, it turned out to be forged. The dates were tampered with in blue ink. I summoned him for questioning, and he admitted that he forged the dates,” said the brigadier.

The defendant was cited telling prosecutors that he tampered with the dates when he was at work and used a blue pen to change the numbers from one to two.

Sunday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
