Dubai: A drunk man has been accused of showing his middle finger and beating two policemen who woke him up as he slept between cars in a parking lot.
A building’s Indian watchman was said to have seen the 19-year-old Saudi man drunk and sleeping in a dangerous way between two cars in an open parking at Al Rigga Street. The watchman came out of the building to call the police, according to records, before he spotted a patrol vehicle in front of the building in March. He informed the policemen about the sleeping man.
Two policemen walked towards the spot where the Saudi was sleeping and when they woke him up, the 19-year-old flashed his middle finger in their face and kicked them.
The Saudi was taken into custody for gesturing indecently to the policemen and beating them.
Prosecutors charged the Saudi suspect with getting drunk, assaulting two policemen and gesturing indecently in public.
When he appeared before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Thursday, the suspect admitted that he had got drunk.
He denied kicking and flashing his middle finger in the face of the policemen as he pleaded not guilty before presiding judge Urfan Omar.
One of the two policemen told prosecutors that the watchman stopped them in the street and alerted them that there was a drunk man sleeping dangerously between cars.
“We went to the spot and saw the Saudi suspect asleep. Once I tried to wake the suspect up, he instantly kicked me and flicked his middle finger in my face. When the suspect jumped up wanting to run away, my partner grabbed him … but the suspect resisted ferociously and bit my partner. He also punched him but I managed to assist my colleague in restraining the suspect and we took him into custody,” he testified to prosecutors.
The other policeman confirmed his partner’s statement and told prosecutors that the suspect punched him on his head and bit him.
The trial continues.
