Dubai: A driver has been jailed for three months for stealing two safes from his workplace that contained two chequebooks and four separate cheques worth tens of thousands of dirhams as well as cash.

The 33-year-old Egyptian driver, H.S., entered the premises of the company where he worked and stole the two safes that contained more than 100 cheques and more than Dh17,500 in cash in December.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted H.S. of theft after he entered a guilty plea.

“Yes, I stole the safes,” H.S. told the court.

Presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi said the accused will be deported after serving his imprisonment.

The company’s manager said one of his employees informed him about the heist over the phone.

“An Egyptian accountant told me over the phone that the company’s supervisor had discovered the door was not locked properly. When he walked inside, he discovered that the glass door had been broken and the safes were missing. The first safe contained two chequebooks … more than 100 cheques that were already signed and ready to be cashed. It also contained separate cheques worth more than Dh30,000 and a few ATM and credit cards. The second safe contained cash,” said the manager.

The defendant was cited confessing to police interrogators and prosecutors that he stole the safes from his workplace.

Dubai Police’s forensic evidence report confirmed that the suspect’s fingerprints matched those lifted from the crime scene.

Sunday’s ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
