Dubai A designer is challenging a six-month imprisonment that he was handed for secretly filming his female flatmates naked using a digital camera he fitted in a hung dress in the washroom.
The 37-year-old Filipino designer, J.L., fixed a small digital camera in the dress and hung it on the washroom door in November to secretly film his flatmates undress.
The Dubai Court of First Instance jailed J.L. six month after convicting him of breach of privacy and molesting an unknown number of women who were unidentified.
Having entered a guilty plea and plea for mercy, the Filipino was convicted of attempting to molest and breach the privacy of his two Filipina flatmates.
Records said a number of women shared the residence with the accused, who has appealed the six-month jail term and will appear before the Dubai Appeals Court in August.
According to the primary ruling, the designer also faces a deportation order.
Records said the accused fixed the camera in a very professional way in the dress to keep it hidden from the women who shared the accommodation with him.
A 34-year-old Filipina coordinator said her flatmate informed her that she had spotted something strange in the washroom.
“When I returned home from work, my flatmate told me she had seen something strange behind the washroom door. We went to the bathroom to check … we discovered that it was a camera hidden inside a dress. I removed the camera and opened it but there was no memory or flash card inside. I took the device and went to the police who informed me that there was no recording on it. I went back home and walked directly to J.L. and threw the device in his face. When I asked him what the device was, he immediately admitted it was a camera that he fixed in the dress so he could film us in the washroom,” she stated.
The defendant was cited admitting to prosecutors he fixed the camera in September before his flatmates discovered it in November.
“I fixed another camera in a woman’s bedroom without her knowledge to film her undressing whenever she was inside. I filmed several video footages of women getting undressed for my personal pleasure,” he was quoted as saying.
