Dubai: A designer has been accused of secretly filming his female flatmates naked using a digital camera that he fitted in a dress and hung in the washroom.

The 37-year-old Filipino designer, J.L., was said to have fixed the small digital camera in dress and hung it on the washroom door to secretly film his flatmates undress in November.

Prosecutors accused J.L. breaching the privacy and molesting an unknown number of women who were unidentified. He was additionally accused of attempting to molest and breach the privacy of his two Filipina flatmates.

Records said a number of women shared the residence with the suspect.

The suspect did not enter a plea as he failed to show up before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Wednesday.

According to the charge sheet, prosecutor said the suspect fixed the camera in a very professional way in the dress to keep it hidden from the women who shared the accommodation with him.

A 34-year-old Filipina coordinator testified to prosecutors that her flatmate informed her that she had spotted something strange in the washroom.

“When I returned home from work, my flatmate told me that she saw something strange behind the washroom door. We went to the bathroom to check … we discovered that it was a camera hidden inside a dress. I removed the camera and opened it but there was no memory or flash card inside. I took the device and went to the police who informed me that there was no recording on it. I went back home and walked directly to J.L. and threw the device in his face. When I asked him what was the device, he immediately admitted that it was a camera that he fixed in the dress so he could film us in the washroom,” she claimed in her prosecution statement.

The defendant was cited admitting to prosecutors that he fixed the camera in September before his flatmates discovered it in November.

“I also fixed another camera in a woman’s bedroom without her knowledge to film her undressing whenever she was inside. I filmed several video footage of women getting undressed for my personal pleasure,” he was quoted as saying.

Presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi will hand out a ruling on July 8.
