Dubai: A clerk, who threatened to kill his supervisor when he failed to convince the latter to resolve a misunderstanding between him and a common friend, has been jailed for three months.

The 23-year-old Indian clerk called up his countryman supervisor and tried to talk him into patching up with their common friend following a misunderstanding between the supervisor and the friend in February.

When the supervisor rejected the clerk’s initiative, the 23-year-old clerk, who happened to be drunk, threatened the victim over the phone that he would kill him if he did not patch up with their common friend. He also cursed the supervisor and slandered his family as well.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the clerk on Tuesday of threatening the victim and cursing him.

When he appeared in the court, the defendant contended that he did not threaten the victim and denied the charge of cursing him.

He claimed that he was drunk and did not remember what he said, but maintained that he was trying to resolve the misunderstanding between the victim and the common friend.

Presiding judge Shaikh Hamad said the accused will be deported after serving the jail term.

The Indian supervisor testified that the incident happened when the defendant called him to discuss the misunderstanding.

“The 23-year-old called me up … he was too angry and threatened to kill me. He also cursed me because of the misunderstanding with his friend. He said that he would end my life if I refused to patch up with the friend. I felt scared,” the supervisor said.

The defendant was cited as telling prosecutors that he had been drinking alcohol when he threatened the victim over the phone.

He also admitted that he had threatened to beat the supervisor and cursed him and his mother.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
