Dubai: A clerk has been accused of beating a sergeant and injuring him following a 30-minute street chase, during which he refused to stop for a police patrol when asked to do so.

The sergeant was said to be patrolling in Al Barsha when he spotted the 29-year-old Sri Lankan clerk driving a car wanted for impoundment in March.

The sergeant used the patrol’s light bar and siren to make the 29-year-old clerk to stop but he continued driving.

The police sergeant had to chase the clerk for nearly 30 minutes and when the 29-year-old reached Meydan Street, the sergeant was forced to overtake him, blocked his way and forced him to pull over.

The Sri Lankan jumped out of his vehicle and ran away refusing to yield to the sergeant’s orders to stop.

The latter chased the clerk and when he tried to restrain and handcuff him, the 29-year-old pushed the sergeant, who fell on the ground and injured himself.

The clerk had also refused to sit in the police car when the sergeant asked him to do so.

The 29-year-old turned physically violent with the sergeant for a brief period before the latter restrained him.

Upon searching the clerk’s car, the police sergeant found liquor bottles in the trunk.

Prosecutors accused the suspect of assaulting an on-duty law enforcement officer and possessing 87 liquor bottles to sell them.

The suspect failed to show up before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Sunday.

The sergeant told prosecutors that he discovered that the suspect’s car was wanted for impoundment after checking its number plate in the police system.

“The suspect refused to comply and pull over although I asked him to do so by using the light bar and the siren. I chased him for nearly 30 minutes and forced him to stop at Meydan Street. He resisted arrest and assaulted me … he also refused to be handcuffed. I prevented him from running away and restrained him. Then a police tow truck took away the suspect’s car to the impoundment section. Upon searching the rear trunk, I found the liquor hidden in a big bag,” he told prosecutors.

Presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi will sentence the suspect in absentia on June 21.
