Dubai: A carpenter has been jailed for three months for threatening to slit the neck of a babysitter, who had discovered that he was having a secret affair with her co-worker.

The 48-year-old Indian carpenter, J.S., had been involved with an Indonesian housemaid, I.S., and had been secretly visiting her and having sex with her without her Emirati sponsor’s knowledge.

One day, I.S.’s compatriot, a babysitter, discovered that J.S. had been visiting the former’s bedroom and having sex with her every time her sponsor and his wife went to work.

In November last year, when the babysitter spotted J.S. leaving I.S.’ bedroom, J.S. pointed his finger to his neck and moved it left to right signalling that he would kill her.

The Dubai Court of First Instance convicted J.S. of verbally threatening to kill the babysitter.

The accused will be deported following the completion of his punishment.

The Emirati sponsor’s neighbour contacted him and told him that the carpenter repeatedly entered the house whenever he was away.

The sponsor monitored J.S. for a while until he discovered that he and I.S. were having an affair and then reported the matter to the police.

The accused pleaded not guilty and denied having threatened to kill the babysitter.

“I did not threaten her. I did not enter the house or the maid’s bedroom,” J.S. told the presiding judge.

When asked how had the sponsor identified him, the defendant replied: “I had done some carpentry work for him at his villa earlier.”

The Dubai Misdemeanours Court imprisoned I.S. and J.S. for having unmarried sex.

The babysitter testified that she thought J.S. had been visiting her sponsor’s residence because he was doing carpentry work at the new majlis.

“One day, J.S. parked his car at the neighbour’s entrance and went to I.S.’ bedroom. I shouted at them when I saw them together. He said he would kill me if I told anybody that I had seen them together. He moved his finger across his neck in a way that showed that he would kill me. I.S. admitted to me later that she had been having an affair with the accused,” she said.

The sponsor said he monitored the defendant’s car and chased him to a nearby construction site where he restrained him and called the police.

“I.S. admitted to my wife that she had been having an affair with J.S., who had also promised to marry her,” he testified.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 13 days.
