Dubai: A businessman has been accused of smashing the glasses of two cars and stealing cash, personal documents and credit cards with which he bought video games.

An Indian man was said to have parked his vehicle in the parking lot behind the building where he lives and when he woke up in the morning wanting to go to work, he discovered that the triangular glass had been smashed and his wallet stolen in July.

The same thing happened to an Indian driver, who discovered that the glass of his car had been broken and Dh100 and a Nol card stolen, when he went to start his car in the morning, according to records.

Police were called in after the two thefts before preliminary investigation revealed that a 36-year-old Bangladeshi businessman was involved.

Records said that the thief was identified as his face appeared on the security cameras installed on top of an ATM machine from which he had tried to withdraw using a stolen card.

Prosecutors accused the 36-year-old of smashing the triangular glass of a Hyundai that belonged to the Indian man and stealing four credits cards and two Emirates ID cards that belonged to the man and his daughter. He was also accused of causing damage worth Dh700 to the car and embezzling Dh7,400 by using the cards to purchase video games.

According to the charge sheet, the suspect stole Dh100 in cash and a Nol car that had Dh85 credit from a driver’s car. He also caused Dh300 worth of damage to the driver’s car.

The suspect pleaded not guilty before the Dubai Court of First Instance on Wednesday.

When asked by presiding judge Arafa Mohammad if he could afford to hire a lawyer to defend him, he said no.

The Indian man claimed to prosecutors that he had parked his car near his residence at night and discovered that it had been destroyed and valuables in it stolen the next day at 7am.

A police corporal testified to prosecutors that police tracked down the suspect and identified him once he attempted to use one of the cards at an ATM machine.

“The suspect was apprehended in Al Nahda. During questioning, he admitted that he and his runaway friend had stolen the wallets and cards from the two cars. We seized a stolen laptop and some cash from his residence,” the corporal told prosecutors.

The court will appoint a lawyer to defend the suspect when it reconvenes on October 2.
