Dubai: A manager stepped in before a court to waive a criminal case against his sacked female employee, who had threatened to destroy his life if he didn’t pay her Dh3 million.

The German woman had refuted the accusation of threatening her Iranian former boss over the phone, saying that she would ruin his life and his family’s if he did not compensate her for her arbitrary dismissal in September 2014.

Present before the Dubai Court of First Instance, the Iranian claimant told presiding judge Fahd Al Shamsi that he waived his criminal complaint against the suspect.

“Is that final? Have you reconciled and settled the dispute?” presiding judge Al Shamsi asked the Iranian in his capacity as a prosecution witness.

“Yes, your Honour. The incident happened after she was sacked from the company. Then this case took place and I complained to the police after she threatened me. Now the dispute is over. I have dropped my complaint against her and there is a written copy of the waiver present in the case file,” the manager said.

The court also allowed the suspect’s lawyer to cross-examine the Iranian witness for some time.

Records said the claimant, a Dubai-based company’s executive manager, was believed to have reported the threat to the police after he terminated the woman’s services due to professional incompetence.

In his testimony before prosecutors, the Iranian claimed that the woman was hired as his personal assistant after she claimed to hold degrees in medicine and in commerce.

“She handled my health affairs and the company’s commercial affairs. She was late in providing us with her degrees to process her residency. In the beginning she proved to be competent and professional and had good relations with her colleagues. Her behaviour and competence changed and she became a troublemaker … she failed to perform well. I discovered later that she constantly checked my private phones and laptop. I fired her,” the boss claimed to prosecutors.

“In September, she told me over the phone that I had ruined her life and threatened to destroy my life if I did not pay her Dh3 million. When I asked her how she would ruin my life, she claimed that she would divulge the secrets of my company to business competitors. She threatened to ruin my reputation. I made several of my colleagues and company managers listen to her threats on the speakerphone,” claimed the boss.

Two of the company’s directors confirmed the claimant’s statement.

A partner in the company testified to prosecutors that the Iranian and the defendant met along with their lawyers to settle a labour dispute between them. The German woman also lodged a sexual harassment complaint against the Iranian at Al Muraqqabat police station, the partner said.

During the hearing, presiding judge Al Shamsi asked the German woman about her sexual harassment complaint before she revealed that she had waived that complaint.

A ruling will be heard next month.
