Dubai: A woman, who works with a catering company at Dubai airport, has been jailed for three months for stealing a wristwatch worth Dh25,000.

An Emirati passenger had forgotten his wristwatch near his seat in the plane’s business class in April.

The 23-year-old Nepali woman allegedly found it and hid it in her pocket in April.

When she finished her shift, security guards at Dubai International Airport found the watch hidden inside a box of gloves she was carrying.

When a guard asked the woman about the watch, she said that she had brought it with her from home.

The guard called police officers present at the airport to question the 23-year-old.

On Monday, the Dubai Court of First Instance convicted the defendant of stealing the wristwatch.

Presiding judge Urfan Omar said the accused will be deported after serving her jail term.

The passenger testified that he had just flown in back from Europe at 6.30am when he forgot his wristwatch.

“When I reached home, I realised that I had forgotten my Dh25,000 silver watch. I emailed the airline and told them about the watch,” he said.

The defendant told prosecutors that she kept the watch in her pocket after she found it in the business class.

She also admitted that the airport’s security guards found the wristwatch hidden in the box of gloves where she had placed it as she tried to take it home.

The primary ruling remains subject to appeal within 15 days.
