Dubai: Don’t be surprised if you see people manually cleaning the stretch of Shaikh Zayed Road for the next two months.
The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced on Monday its clean-up programme on Dubai roads beginning with Shaikh Zayed Road to remove accumulated trash including sand and grass. The campaign is being held in collaboration with Dubai Municipality and other related service entities.
Some sections of the road will be closed for the cleaning operations. A specialist team composed of engineers and technical inspectors will coordinate with the Traffic and Roads Department of RTA to provide traffic diversions complete with directional signage to ensure public safety and ensure smooth traffic flow.
“We have opted for Shaikh Zayed Road as a starting point due to its vital importance and strategic location both to the aesthetic and urban aspects. The approved programme includes cleaning works and the removal of accumulated dust in the medians,” Engineer Maitha Bin Udai, CEO of RTA Traffic and Roads Agency, said.
“The campaign is launched with the intention of boosting the profile of Dubai among modern cosmopolitan cities; which epitomises the urbanised and futuristic vision of our prudent leaders aimed at turning the emirate into an attractive hub in keeping with the advancements it made at all fronts,” Maitha added.
A total of 17,552 garbage bags have been collected from a section of Shaikh Zayed Road stretching five kilometres from the Trade Centre tunnel to the Al Safa Park Bridge according to Engineer Salah Amiri, Assistant Director General for the Environmental Services Sector and Public Health of Dubai Municipality. Amiri said more than 45 workers manually cleaned that section of the two-way highway.
RTA patrols will be at the cleaning sites to ensure smooth traffic movement as well as to safeguard the workers.
