Dubai: Dubai Police Traffic Department Radars helped caught an alcohol smuggler, a senior police official told Gulf News yesterday.
Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazrouei, acting director of Dubai Police Traffic department, said on Thursday that an Asian man was arrested by police last month when he was caught using stolen plate numbers on his car.
Colonel Al Mazrouei said that the man was caught by the radars several times for over speeding and his traffic fines in two months exceeded Dh47,000.
Colonel Al Mazrouei said the accused stole a number plate from an abandoned car and fixed it on his car.
“He used to use his car to smuggle alcohol,” he said.
“The owner of the plate numbers reported to the police station that the plate numbers of his car which he is not using were stolen,” he said.
He said that the traffic department investigation team tracked a car with the same stole plate numbers.
“It was different car and model from the one registered at police department with those plate numbers,” he said.
“The car with stolen plate numbers used to over speed and the driver receives several traffic fines on Shaikh Zayed road and in two months the fines reached Dh47,000,” he said.
“We started tracking the car and we found out that the driver used the same route every day,” he said.
Colonel Al Mazrouei said the car was monitored by police for two months.
“We reported the car and we informed police patrols to follow the car which was on Shaikh Zayed road,” he said.
He said the wanted car driver tried to escape from police who chased him for several kilometres on the road.
“He tried to escape from police but at the end he was involved in a traffic accident which forced him to stop his car,” he said.
Colonel Al Mazrouei said when the man was arrested and his car was inspected it was found that there are boxes of alcohol inside the car.
“The man was arrested early last month, and he admitted his crimes. The case was transferred to public prosecutor and to Dubai court,” he said.
He said the accused was charged with smuggling of alcohol, over-speeding, running away from police, forgery for stealing car plate numbers from another car and used it on his own car, and also he was charged with theft.
