Abu Dhabi: From Sunday onwards, motorists with vehicles registered in the emirate of Abu Dhabi can pay off fines for traffic violations in instalments.
The instalment system follows an agreement between the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrol Directorate and the Department of Transport, the Abu Dhabi Police announced.
The decision aims to make it easier for motorists to clear their traffic fines.
Motorists must however apply within the next three months to avail of the decision.
“Motorists with many violations can use this instalment system to pay off all the fines on their record. We want to ensure that residents do not accumulate too many fines, and drive safe,” said Brigadier General Hussain Al Harithi, director of the Traffic and Patrols Directorate.
The instalments can be used to pay off traffic fines for vehicles registered in Abu Dhabi emirate, including the capital, Al Ain and the Western Region (Al Gharbia).
The fines can have been incurred across the UAE, and in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries. Both Emirati and non-Emirati motorists may apply.
However, the decision only applies to traffic fines issued to vehicles owned by individuals.
Payment in instalments is not available for vehicles owned by companies or organisations.
Motorists with only one traffic violation cannot make use of the instalment system either. Only those with two or more traffic violations can avail of it.
When applying, the motorist must pay off 50 per cent of the total amount due for traffic violation fines. The rest can be paid off in instalments over the next 12 months.
In addition, motorists who wish to sell their cars must first settle all traffic fines. However, a resident who owns two cars and wants to sell only one can shift all traffic fines to the car he intends to keep.
Mohammad Nasser Al Otaiba, general manager of Mawaqif at the Department of Transport, said the decision with the Abu Dhabi Police intended to ease traffic fine payments for residents.
He also urged people to offer complaints about the system, or make suggestions about any way in which it can be improved.
