Yemen starts campaign to immunise 4m children
Yemen has implemented a nationwide anti-polio campaign to immunise more than 4 million children under five.
Sana'a Yemen has implemented a nationwide anti-polio campaign to immunise more than 4 million children under five.
The campaign which is being implemented from house to house will be the last one as Yemen will be announced as a polio-free country by 2009, officials and organisers of the campaign said.
"The anti-polio campaign of today will be, hopefully, the last one as our country will be announced free from polio next year," said the Vice President of the republic, Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi, who kicked off the campaign in the capital Sana'a.
The three-day campaign, which was funded and supported by the UNICEF and WHO, will be carried out by some 40,000 health workers, said the Minister of Public Health and Population, Abdul Kareem Rase.
About 5,000 supervisors and 5,000 vehicles will participate in the campaign, he said.
He also said Yemen will receive a certificate from WHO for being free from polio in March next year.
