Sana’a: Yemen security services have denied news reports about the drowning of 12 Indian sailors off the Yemeni coast on Thursday night.

Lieutenant Hussain Al Yahri, director of Shiher City’s Criminal Investigation Department, told Gulf News that the crew of the ship arrived “safe and sound” and their vessel stranded due to low water level.

“The ship did not sink and the crew are on board now. As they do not speak Arabic, we will take them to the city of Mukalla for further investigations.”

The official said that the ship, carrying car wheels and mattresses, was heading to Mukalla.

“The official papers on the Al Kauther ship show that it is owned by an Indian named Ahmad Mohammad.”

Quoting a statement on the ministry of interior’s website, news agencies reported on Saturday night that a cargo ship carrying car parts sank off the coast of Yemen, killing all 12 Indian crew.
