Sana’a: A newly wedded couple died on their wedding night after inhaling fumes from a power generator in southern Yemen, ministry of interior said on Saturday.

Police said that the groom and his bride went home after their wedding reception in the southern city of Towban, Lahj province. There was a power cut when they returned home. The husband started the generator and rested with his wife on their bed, not knowing that their first night would also be their last.

As the couple dozed off, the generator’s fumes entered their room, suffocating them. The couple’s relatives, who came the next day to congratulate them, had to break into the house when they did not get any response from the couple and were shocked when they found them lying dead in their bedroom.

Many similar tragic stories have occurred in recent years across country. In some cases, members of an entire family have died after inhaling generator fumes.

Police have advised people to keep their windows open and keep their generators away from their bedrooms at night to avoid similar tragedies. The government attributes long cuts of power to attacks on power grids in the province of Mareb by armed tribesmen. The attackers usually demand the release of incarcerated relatives in the capital and more jobs. The government has failed to stop attacks despite launching military crackdowns in the restive province.
