Dubai: Yemen National Army units have liberated Madarat area, west of Taiz Governorate, from militants loyal to the Iran-backed Al Houthis and ousted president Ali Abdullah Saleh.

Yemen News Agency (SABA) quoted a military source as saying that five Al Houthi militia soldiers were killed and that the army took complete control of Madarat.

The source added that Yemen National Army’s artillery targeted positions in Tabbat Al Dhanin, Al Hangar and Mafraq Shara’ab and inflicted heavy losses upon the militants.

Yemen, one of the poorest countries in the Arab world, has been convulsed by civil strife for more than two years.

Al Houthi rebels ousted the legitimate government of President Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi, the United States’ main counterterrorism partner in the country, and have been fighting a Saudi-led Arab coalition that back Hadi.
