Dubai: The UAE has pledged to restore the electricity sector completely in Aden and other southern Yemeni provinces.
UAE plans on doing so by performing maintenance work on existing electricity networks, establishing new power plants and creating a strategy to reduce electricity problems in Aden.
Mujeeb Al Shaby, director-general of the Electricity Corporation in Aden, told Yemen’s Marib Press News network that successful solutions were discussed with Faris Obaid Al Daheri, director-general of Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority while the Yemeni delegation visited the UAE.
He said the UAE have committed to providing gas- and diesel-powered stations with the capacity of 440MW in Aden and the provinces of Lahij, Abyan and Dhala.
The UAE will also be transferring all its currently available generating power in the near future once the civil work is completed. It will also send spare station parts to stations in Al Hiswa, Al Mansoora and Khormaksar in Aden.
Al Shaby also said the UAE has committed to establishing a line of 132kV from Al Hiswa to Al Mansoora. The UAE will also provide electrical equipment for the public network and 140MW to the stations in Hadhramaut, Mahram, Socotra and Shabwah.
When it comes to strategic solutions, the UAE has commissioned a global consultancy to develop plans that modernise and develop the electricity capacity by 1,000MW.
Al Shaby expects that once implemented, the results of the solutions discussed will be noticed by the summer of 2016. He thanked the UAE for their generosity and sparing no effort to alleviate the suffering of the people in Yemen.
Meanwhile the Emirates Red Crescent yesterday, in cooperation with the Save Aden Campaign, started the first stages of a project that aims to provide water to the people located in the high areas of Yemen as well as providing small businesses to families in need, including the families of those martyred in the war.
