Geneva: The United Arab Emirates has pledged to continue to provide humanitarian assistance to Yemen, to the tune of $1.2 billion, Abdullah Fadhil Al Nuaimi of the UAE’s Permanent Mission to the UN in Geneva said on Friday.

Addressing a session of the Human Rights Council’s interactive dialogue on technical assistance to Yemen, Al Nuaimi said the UAE’s aid to Yemen would be spent across a number of key sectors, such as humanitarian assistance, energy, aid, transport, health care, education, infrastructure development, public services, water and drain systems, as well as boosting the role of civil society and public utilities.

In his statement, Al Nuaimi renewed the UAE’s support to the legitimate government in Yemen and praised its cooperation with all partners engaged in national and regional efforts to find solution to the crisis there.

The UAE also welcomed findings of the report, prepared last month by the Yemeni Independent National Commission of Inquiry on the status of human rights and commended Yemen’s cooperation with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights.

Al Nuaimi underlined resolutions by the Arab summits and other international organisations that stressed the necessity to implement the Security Council Resolution 2216 and other relevant resolutions, as well as the need to continue the GCC initiative, to adopt the outcome of the national dialogue and to support the UN call for a peaceful solution that maintains Yemen’s unity, independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity, while rejecting any interference in Yemen’s internal affairs.

He further said that the efforts to reach a political solution in Yemen had not been successful because of hostilities by Iran-backed Al Houthis and the deposed government of Ali Abdullah Saleh.
