Sana'a: Tens of thousands of Yemenis protested yesterday both in support and in opposition of President Ali Saleh's government.

Placards called on Saleh to leave power. "We are here to say enough. The president should go," opposition politician Mohammad Al Sabri shouted.

Pro-government protesters held signs that said "no to violence" and "no to conspiracy against the homeland". While there were no reports of violence, security was heavy throughout the city. Yemeni people inspired by the events in Tunisia have been demonstrating for weeks for regime change.

The ruling party seems determined to go to April's polls without the participation of the main opposition parties.

President Saleh will meet on January 29 with a council of his ministers to discuss final preparation of elections in April.
