Aden: A suicide car bomber attacked a security intelligence post in southeastern Yemen on Saturday, wounding two military guards, an official said, accusing Al Qaida of responsibility.

The bombing came hours after gunmen shot dead an army officer as he came out of a grocery shop in Aden, capital of southern Yemen, which has seen a spike in attacks on security forces.

In Saturday’s attack, the car exploded at the entrance of the post in a residential neighbourhood of Mukalla, the provincial capital of Hadramaut, causing damage to it and other buildings, said a security official.

Guards had opened fire on the car driven by an “Al Qaida suicide bomber” as it approached the entrance, the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The Yemen-based Al Qaida in the Arabian Peninsula is regarded by the United States as the global jihadist network’s most dangerous franchise and has been subjected to an intensifying drone war this year.

On Friday, senior AQAP member Qassem Al Rimi threatened in an online video to strike back at any party involved in the drone campaign that has killed dozens of suspected jihadists.

The Yemeni army launched an offensive on Tuesday against hideouts of the Al Qaida affiliate, mainly in the south where the militants are strongly rooted.

Late Friday, gunmen shot dead Colonel Sanad Al Maishari in the Mansoura neighbourhood of Aden, police officials said.

The army officer had just gone to do some shopping and was coming out of the store when he was killed, in the latest attack targeting army and police officers in Aden in the past few months.
